White New Zealanders are called Kiwis after their national symbol the Kiwi (Bird). Native New Zealanders (brown) have the proper name of Maori from their language. That probs doesn't make sense but hopefully you get the gist.

We're called kiwis after our national bird. Only those people of maori (our indigenous people) descent are called Maoris.
